Field Report.

Field Report is a must listen. Not much else to say about it besides a resounding - they're dope. 

Originally part of Wisconsin based DeYarmond Edison they shared a stage with their bandmate, BON IVER before breaking off to both work on their personal projects. This quote from Adam Duritz, of the Counting Crows, sums their music up best.

"Fergus Falls" by Field Report -- "It's the most incredible song. I can't wait until that entire album comes out and people can hear it. It's an astonishing record ... the songwriting is so good. I got a copy of the CD and was listening to it in the car on the way to the airport, and i had never heard the record in the car, and it blew my mind. I missed my plane driving around San Francisco listening to this record. The scope of the writing, the ambitiousness of the music ... it's bigger than the small stories it's telling."

Avant Garde Diaries & Mike D present: Transmission LA AV Club

Angelenos and or anyone visiting the city from now through May 6th, definitely plan a stop at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA for an amazing installation experience curated by Mike D. (yes that Mike D of Beastie Boy fame)

Without giving too much away; let's just say it's filled with music, light and art. Get there and experience it for yourself. 

Music Friday - MMOTHS

KCRW speaks, we listen. A new artist to sink your teeth into is MMOTHS. Hailing from Ireland and only 18, he's already slated for indie scene music domination. 

Mario Cotto said, "I had the great pleasure of spinning at the Kitsune Club Night last month that hosted his LA debut. I got a chance to hear his gorgeously atmospheric set and believe he has a very bright future designing elaborate cathedrals of sound."

We're in. 

Music Thursday - Y La Bamba.

KCRW currently lists Portland based band, Y LA BAMBA as an "ARTIST YOU SHOULD KNOW." We couldn't agree more. 

Luzelena Mendoza's voice holds center court and the songs make you want to tap your feet. Get in the know, you heard it here first.

You heard it here first.  New band alert - Alabama Shakes. I am going to let her voice speak for itself. 

They're opening for Jack White starting in May so get out there and become a fan.

Music Wednesday - GRACE WOODROOFE

Grace Woodroofe, originally from Perth, came over and rocked the SXSW festival last week. At only 22 years old, she's already collaborated with Ben Harper so plan on this girl being around for a while. 

If you're in LA she's performing a residency at The Bootleg Bar through April - so listen up and get to know her.

Music Friday - Dent May.

Dent May is and (has been) rocking the stage at SXSW this week. Born and bred in Mississippi and inspired by the music of Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, he comes to us with his own unique flair.

Combining humor with catch beats will always land in our wheel house. We dig it. Enjoy this and your weekend.

Dylan in Paris.

If you're able to make it Paris anytime soon, make sure to stop off at the BOB DYLAN Rock Explosion exhibit at Cité de la musique. 

Curated by the GRAMMY MUSEUM of Los Angeles, it's filled with pictures depicting the life and times of Dylan from 1961 - 1966. Captured by Photographer Daniel Kramer,  the description states, "Kramer's sixty photographs, which make up the core of the exhibition, are a striking account of the folk singer's metamorphosis into a rock star. This photographic "backstage view" of the singer-songwriter - frail, almost androgynous, with an angelic but extremely determined look in his eye - opens onto three rooms showcasing key moments in his musical career, and a dip into the history of American music."

Wish we could go, le sigh.  

Music Wednesday - The White Buffalo

The White Buffalo is a relatively new artist, making his presence known in the indie scene. Considered a story-teller, his latest album, Once Upon a Time in the West was given 4 stars and is already considered a hit maker.

Raj Dayal, of American Songwriter, said this of Jake Smith, "Smith’s candor in this collection of hard-won songs is admirable. The gravity of these tracks serve as somewhat of an announcement of Smith’s arrival, and it appears he doesn’t plan on going anywhere soon."

Music Monday - The Swell Season

You might know them, you might not. They were the story behind the movie ONCE that came out of nowhere to steal away an OSCAR for best original song in 2008. Since then, they have toured the world playing to sold out stadiums and intimate back room stages and have amassed quite a following.

We were lucky enough to see them at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica last week for a benefit show that sold out in 8 minutes. (literally) It was one of the best concerts we've ever been to. Raw, rich with talent and off the cuff, the duo played for over 2 hours and left to a standing ovation lasting well over 2 minutes.

If you don't know them, you need to.

Music Thursday - DeadMau5

We're totally digging on DeadMau5 and think his sound is pretty dope. Featured on the Grammy's with The Foo Fighters, his stage persona leaves fans as mesmerized as his beats.

According to his bio pulled directly from Spotify - "Born in Toronto, Joel Zimmerman rose to prominence when his track "Faxing Berlin" found its way onto the playlist of legendary DJ/producer Pete Tong's radio show."

we can't get enough of M.I.A.

We're always on the edge of our seat waiting to see what the ever-controversial M.I.A. is going to do next. For her newest video, "Bad Girls," the British-Tamil rapper turned clichè rap video stereotypes on their head, complete with a desert party and some sweet car tricks. And as always, M.I.A. is rocking some one-of-a-kind outfits. This girl's got some serious swagger. What do you think about her new video?

Music Tuesday - Gotye.

 

GOTYE's releasing his third studio album Making Mirrors to much excitement and anticipation. According to BUST magazine's Eliza C. Thompson, "it's filled with percussion-driven songs in a wide range of compositional styles. Recorded in a barn down under in remote Australia, Belgian multi-instrumentalist Wouter "Wally" De Backer creates an intricate, expansive sound on what's sure to be a breakout album."

Accompanied above by New Zealand's own Kimbra in his new single, Somebody That I Used to Know,  Gotye melodically blends the line between music and artistry. We dig, what do you think?

Ok we usually we save our music posts for Mondays so everyone (us included) can start the week off with a little inspiration but we had the privilege of going to a benefit concert on Tuesday night at The Hotel Cafe and we can't get the musical amazingness out of our head.


Besides the ALWAYS brilliant Joe Purdy, we caught The MakePeace Brothers and were blown away by their sound. Their songs run the gamut from slow and folksy to all out bring down the house. Check them out for yourself and let us know what you think. 


PS. As if being supremely talented wasn't enough, they spend the majority of their time and efforts dedicated to human rights efforts all over the globe. In one word...dope.
