The White Buffalo is a relatively new artist, making his presence known in the indie scene. Considered a story-teller, his latest album, Once Upon a Time in the West was given 4 stars and is already considered a hit maker.

Raj Dayal, of American Songwriter, said this of Jake Smith, "Smith’s candor in this collection of hard-won songs is admirable. The gravity of these tracks serve as somewhat of an announcement of Smith’s arrival, and it appears he doesn’t plan on going anywhere soon."

Music Monday - The Swell Season

You might know them, you might not. They were the story behind the movie ONCE that came out of nowhere to steal away an OSCAR for best original song in 2008. Since then, they have toured the world playing to sold out stadiums and intimate back room stages and have amassed quite a following.

We were lucky enough to see them at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica last week for a benefit show that sold out in 8 minutes. (literally) It was one of the best concerts we've ever been to. Raw, rich with talent and off the cuff, the duo played for over 2 hours and left to a standing ovation lasting well over 2 minutes.

Karmin is described as "a little band with a big sound." Nick and Amy met at Berklee College of Music in Boston and began permanently combining their talents after some group projects felt a little too good to let go.

First gaining fans and support through their campy covers of Nicki Minaj, they now are setting off into the music stratosphere on their own. Here is their first single, Crash the Party. Teen Vogue stands behind it and so do we. Definitely good party music.

FAY WOLF originally hails from Connecticut but considers herself an LA-based singer songwriter. Her sound and songs evoke comparisons to the likes of Tori Amos and Ani DeFranco.

We had the privilege of hearing her belt her heart out during the VOICES of FREEDOM tour that stopped at The Hotel Cafe last week Tuesday. She was brilliant and is definitely one to know.

We dig the color grey in all it's variations and shades and seriously can't get enough of it. So much so, we decided to pull together some items from the always rad POLYVORE that fit into our grey state of mind today.

Ok we usually we save our music posts for Mondays so everyone (us included) can start the week off with a little inspiration but we had the privilege of going to a benefit concert on Tuesday night at The Hotel Cafe and we can't get the musical amazingness out of our head.

Besides the ALWAYS brilliant Joe Purdy, we caught The MakePeace Brothers and were blown away by their sound. Their songs run the gamut from slow and folksy to all out bring down the house. Check them out for yourself and let us know what you think.

PS. As if being supremely talented wasn't enough, they spend the majority of their time and efforts dedicated to human rights efforts all over the globe. In one word...dope.

It doesn't take much to get inspired around the holidays. But we dug a little deeper to see what we've been diggin' besides the festive spirit.

1. Nature - this is broad but it's always on our list.

2. Pattern Play - Patterns are everywhere and as they say, "prints are personal" but we're loving the material mash-ups that are popping up in both fashion and home decor.We say keep it up!

3. Change - A new year is approaching and with it comes the promise of so many new adventures. We say start early and go bold with your choices. Change is scary but more often than not, leads to new beginnings.

4. Accessories - Lately we're feeling the more the better.One can never wear too many bracelets.

let's get crafty: paper ornaments

After we posted about our crafty evening with Mark Montano, we got a few requests from people wanting to know how to make the super cute paper ornaments we showed. Without further ado, here's a quick, easy tutorial for making the cutest paper ornaments in 10 easy steps!

• 16 strips of paper cut to 6 inches long by 3/4 inches wide

• thin wire (picture hanging or jewelry wire will work)

• drinking straw

• needle nose pliers/wire cutters

• 2 small beads

• hole punch for 1 inch diameter circles

1. Cut a 4 inch length of wire, using the needle nose pliers, bend one end of the wire around one of the small beads

2. Punch out two circles using your hole punch, then poke a small hole in the center of each. (A sewing needle or safety pin works great for poking the holes).

3. Slide one of the holes onto the end of the wire, colored side facing out.

4. Using the needle or safety pin, poke a small hole onto both ends of all 16 strips of paper. Place the hole as far toward the edge of the paper as possible, we recommend about 1/8"

5. Slide all 16 pieces of paper onto the wire, colored side facing out.

6. Cut a 3 inch piece of straw and place it onto the wire. This will help keep the shape of your ornament.

7. Take the strip of paper on the very bottom of the pile (it should be the first piece of paper you placed onto the wire) and bring it up to the top of the wire, sliding the top hole over the top edge of the wire. Note: It's very important that you always take the strip of paper from the bottom of the pile.

8. Continue taking strips one at a time and placing them over the top edge of the wire. Again, always grab the strip of paper that is on the bottom of the pile.

9. Push the paper tightly against the edge of the straw. Then, take the second circular hole punch and place it over the wire.

10. Place the second small bead on top of the ornament and use your pliers to bend the wire into a small loop. You'll use this loop to hang the ornament on the tree.

And there you have it! Play around with color and pattern combinations as much as you'd like to create a fun mix of ornaments for your holiday decor!

Music Monday - The Grates

The Grates are a newly discovered obsession of ours hailing from Brisbane, Australia. (although they currently call NYC their home). Comprised of lead vocalist Patience Hodgson and guitarist John Patterson, they have been on the music scene since 2006.

Considered a part of the indie pop genre; their sound is as active as their stage shows. They not only write all their own music but create and design (by hand) all their band merchandise.

Their latest album, Secret Rituals was released in June of 2011 to high acclaim both in their native Australia and the UK and is just starting to stir things up here in the states. If you have the opportunity, The Grates are a must see.

CHEW LIPS is an amazing band hailing from East London that consists of lead singer 'Tigs' Alicia Huertas and multi-instrumentalist James Watkins. Since the debut of their smash single SOLO in 2009, they have spent every waking moment on tour and have blazed a trail many are taking notice of.

After performing at SXSW in Austin, Elle magazine deemed them the best act of the festival. Their unique blend is a mix of vintage sound with electro beats. They are a MUST listen, click here to listen to their mix yourself.

We ventured into the city this weekend and were lucky enough to catch the band Milo Greene opening up for The Civil Wars. They were (simply put), super dope and a great new music find to carry us through the Winter months.

Their best asset is their on stage energy and the vocals led by the only girl member of the group, Marlana Sheetz. She could sing anything and people would line up and drop some change to be transported by her haunting and perfect voice.

Point of this story: We're so glad we went early. Get to know them yourself~

Look no further than the newest collaboration between the band FUN. and Janelle Monáe singing an acoustic version of their song, "We Are Young."

FUN. is an American indie pop group based out of New York City. Led by Nate Ruess and rounded out by Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff; this group has opened for Jack's Mannequin, Paramore and aforementioned, Janelle herself. In short, they rock and you need to get on board.

We're a day late on our Music Monday post, but we promise this one is worth the wait. This week we're celebrating the long awaited new album by Anthony Gonzales of M83. The band has garnered a cult following and the new album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, is the most epic collection of songs they've put out yet. They're playing a sold out show at the Music Box in Hollywood tomorrow night, and we're amping ourselves up by watching the video for the powerful synth-metal single "Midnight City" on repeat. As the granddaughter of critically acclaimed jazz drummer Chuck Flores, it's no surprise filmmaker Jenna Elizabeth Kirkutis has an unusual relationship with music and film. Since studying at Emerson College for film in Boston, Jenna Elizabeth has worked with subjects such as Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Alison Mosshart of The Dead Weather, Willie Nelson. and has even collaborated with notorious fashion photographer Terry Richardson. She's now working on her Shot In The Dark collection, the first film of which, The Third Degree, is already receiving Sundance buzz.

This girl is one to watch, not only for her artistic talent but for her unique, utterly confident sense of style.

But in our opinion, Belgian-Australian musician Gotye has summed up the feeling of a breakup better than anyone else. His lyrics and vocals cut straight to the heart of it. This song has been getting some major airplay lately, and we can see why. After giving it a listen, and watching this amazing music video, we think you'll agree.

We dig our Tassel oxford flats. They can be dressy (exhibit A) or completely casual and everywhere in between.

We love this look too, as it pairs rich whiskey with navy blue which always ends up well, don't you think? Note to self (and all of you) - add a fierce pair of tights to this and you're golden for any type of weather.

Rachael Yamagata is a singer-songwriter hailing from Arlington, VA. She has collaborated with the likes of Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Jason Mraz and Toots and the Maytals to name a few.

From a personal perspective, her voice is hauntingly beautiful and one we could listen to over and over. Her new album, Chesapeake dropped today and we thought we'd share it to celebrate.

Rachael's album inspiration, (in her own words)

"The songs are deep but not sorrowful and there is a sense of humor in some that can only come out when you are sleeping in a tent and considering the name ‘Frankenfish’ for the album title, but Chesapeake won out and Frankenfish became the name of my label. Midway through recording the album, we had a listening party bbq tonight where one person said to me that the songs sound like I’m in control of my own life now and I think she is right. Chesapeake has been made with a lot of love in the room (and tequila) and like the Frankenfish that can swim and walk on land is surprising the hell outta me."

Madewell is currently featuring Binki as their style crush and we can completely see why. Little Joy's story is simple actually. They met, they collaborated and then they moved into a house together in Echo Park and the rest is caught on memorex. Check out this video below shot grassroots style and let us know what you think.

We had an amazing time over the weekend at the Bicycle Film Festival. Originated in NYC by Brendt Barbour, the festival now travels to over 30 cities including Tokyo, Paris and London. Highlights of the program include critically acclaimed documentary Bill Cunningham New York, shorts by Spike Jonze and Casey Neistat and tons of short films by talented indie film makers around the world. If there's one thing that's universal, it's bikes. In the words of the official Bicycle Film Festival mantra, "BIKES ROCK!"

Festival Fashion at FYF Fest

The ladies were out in full force at this weekend's killer music festival FYF Fest. While we partied to the tunes of Broken Social Scene, Girls, Mister Heavenly and others, we also scoped out some hot looks courtesy of the ever stylish ladies of Los Angeles. As always, hats are an essential item at a summer music festival. Our other favorite trends were midi length skirts, black and white color palettes, and of course denim (shirts, jackets, shorts, you name it).
